Behn , Meyer & Co. was established in Singapore on 1 November 1840 as a joint venture between two German , Theodor August Behn and Valentin Lorenz Meyer , . In the company's early years dealing with the trade of tropical produce such as palm oil , copra , pepper , camphor and rattan , but then ventured into the shipping and insurance .

Beer is distributed by the company Behn Meyer & Co . Handel Mij , the branch offices in : Surabaya , Semarang , Batavia , Bandung , Denpasar .

The company started from rented warehouse next to the old Telok Ayer Market as a commission agent , trade between the East ( mainly China , Hong Kong , and Southeast Asia ) and Germany ( in the city of Hamburg and Bremen ) . The company enjoyed success early in their business . With growing profits , they can immediately buy a house in the Chinese Market Street for use as a warehouse . The top floor of the building was converted to office , while a room next to the entrance which was held displays of glass and iron goods . In the 1890s , the company began acquiring properties in Singapore and Penang . The company headquarters is located in a three-story white building at Finlayson Green . The ground floor holds the shipping department and administrative offices plantations ; second floor housed the shipping department for home delivery , this section , cargo , produce and finance department , and the third floor in the accounting department and the Consulate -General .

History after 1900's
On January 1, 1906 , Behn , Meyer and Co. became a limited company , and the company control shifted from Singapore to Hamburg . The first board of directors was Hans Becker , Ad . Asmus Faber , AG , F. Katenkamp , and H. Riege . The company was experiencing a crisis over in 1907 and 1908 when the price of pepper fell . The company was found and survived through World War I , and World II , despite suffering heavy losses . The company still exists today as the Behn Meyer Group . The company has businesses in chemicals , fertilizer / crop protection , engineering , general trading , export , and paper and board , and offices in Germany , Singapore , Malaysia , Thailand , Indonesia , Vietnam , Myanmar , Cambodia and Jamaica .
